Oklahoma Advisers Complete Journalism Workshop
Three Oklahoma scholastic media advisers were among 99 teachers from 33 states plus the District of Columbia who participated in ASNE’s summer workshop and completed the Reynolds High School Journalism Institute.
The Oklahoma advisers included Melissa Law of Texhoma High School,
Kelli Taylor of Harding Charter Preparatory High School and
Heather Willis of Tahlequah High School.
“With the leadership of these teachers, we're helping the next generation of journalists and news consumers embrace the tenets of quality journalism and the First Amendment. The multimedia world is theirs to shape and grow,” said Jeff Cohen, chair of ASNE’s High School Journalism Committee and editor of the Houston Chronicle.
ASNE’s recruitment includes intensive outreach to schools in urban and rural areas where journalism programs are most under stress. The teachers were competitively selected from a field of nearly 300 applicants. Of this year’s 99 schools, 69 (70 percent) have minority student populations of 50 percent or higher. Of the teachers, 31 (31 percent) are people of color.
Since 2001, 1,106 high school teachers have completed the Institute, and most continue to teach journalism and/or advise a student newspaper.
This ground-breaking ASNE initiative is funded by a three-year, $2.3 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
Three accredited university journalism schools hosted the Reynolds Institutes. The attendees qualified for graduate or continuing education credits, with all expenses covered by ASNE through the Reynolds grant.

LHS Wins Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Grant
Lawton High School is the recipient of a $24,000 grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation in support of its newspaper, The Tatler, and other school publications. The foundation recently distributed $3.6 million in grants to 36 journalism organizations nationwide, including LHS.
LHS was the only high school among the 36 recipients. The other grants were presented to universities, non-profit organizations and to groups sponsoring special projects.
Lawton High’s funds will be used to enhance learning opportunities for students involved in production of the school yearbook, newspaper and web site, as well as for any student who takes a journalism class, said Karen Beavers, who serves as adviser for LHS student publications.
“This grant will greatly expand our resources. Where now we are sharing 12 computers among nearly 20 students, each will now be able to have his or her own workstation,” Beavers said. “Another use of the grant will be to upgrade and expand our journalism department so it can afford additional students an opportunity to take our Introduction to Journalism class and to help with the online version of The Tatler.”
“We are also looking at new instructional software that better monitors Internet use and enhances instructional opportunities,” she added. “Students will be using the same software that’s in today’s workplace.”
Edith Kinney Gaylord founded the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation in 1982 to support local and national efforts to improve the quality of journalism practices among various media. The foundation provides funding for projects that promote excellence and instill high ethical standards in journalism.
Recipients of the foundation’s largest grants were the University of Oklahoma, which received $2 million for the final phase of construction at Gaylord Hall, and Oklahoma State University, which received $250,000 for an endowed professorship in sports media.

Revised Fall Media Monday 2006 Schedule
8-9 REGISTRATION IN BEAIRD LOUNGE, OMU: SAME AS ALWAYS
Your bus will drop you off as always and go to the Lloyd Noble parking lot to wait as always. It will return for you at 1:30 rather than 3:30, however.
9-9:15 OPENING CEREMONY OMU BALLROOM: SAME AS ALWAYS
9:30-11:15: MEDIA MIX
We will have arrange the ballroom into five or six subject area modules. At each module, students will listen to a teacher/presenter or, perhaps, two, on their topic area. Students must choose and stay in a cluster area for the two hours. Each area will present from 9-9:20, then have a short break. It will then present more/different information from 10:30-11:20. Students should stay in their cluster for both segments of the MEDIA MIX component.
11:30-12:20 AWARDS CEREMONY
Students will be able, we think, to rejoin their schools for this segment of the day, although they may need to stay in their module areas. I'm working with the OMU staff Thursday on configurations. We will present, as always, the winners of the Individual Category Contests, the yearbook ratings, All-Oklahoman and Sweepstakes.
12:00-1:30 ADVISER LUNCHEON
Tom Quaid of Walsworth is sponsoring our event as he has for many years. We will eat in another room in the OMU given our usual room is one of the many closed for emergency repairs. Please try to attend this if you can. We ask that you e-mail us confirmation of your attendance at the luncheon as soon as possible. We must order food in appropriate amounts.
To read the rest of the revised Fall Media Monday information, please refer to the E-Notes Archive page.

Due to renovation in the Oklahoma Memorial Union, OSM/OIPA has had to change its FMM 2006 date from Oct. 23 to Nov. 6.
From now until Oct. 30 a large segment of the Oklahoma Memorial Union will be closed for renovation. We don't have enough room for the Oct. 23 FMM without the rooms that will be under construction. We have had to move the date to Nov. 6.
We will not change any due dates except the registration dates. Here are the revised dates:
FMM 2006- Nov. 6
FINAL DAY TO REGISTER- Oct. 27
LAST DAY FOR CRITICAL SERVICE/INDIVIDUAL CONTEST ENTRY- Sept. 30

The very last day to register must be Oct. 27. We cannot accept registrations after that.
